Born in colonial Aden. Joined the merchant navy at sixteen and saw most of the world before he was thirty.

Settled in Cardiff's Tiger Bay, later moved to East London. Worked in textile mills until retirement at sixty-eight.
Among the founding worshippers at the early Yemeni mosque in Cardiff. Spoke five languages.
